Builders here knew what the valley water does, and a large share of homes built after roughly 2000 were roughed in with a softener loop in the garage. Spencer's Crossing, Greer Ranch, Copper Canyon and the newer tracts commonly have one.
Two capped copper or PEX stubs close together near where the main line enters the garage is what you are looking for. When it is there we tie straight in, no cutting the main and no new drain run, which is faster and cheaper.

The older areas including Murrieta Hot Springs and Alta Murrieta predate the loop convention on much of the housing. Those installs mean cutting into the main line and routing a regeneration drain, which is more labor and a higher number.

Softener or salt-free in Murrieta?
At valley hardness levels, almost always a softener. Salt-free conditioning does not remove hardness minerals, it conditions them so they are less likely to form scale. That is a defensible trade at 8 or 10 grains. At 20 it leaves the minerals in the water and you keep the spotting.
