Temecula has some of the hardest water in Southern California. Rancho California Water District delivers between 15 and 25 grains per gallon depending on which side of the valley you are on and how much of your supply is coming from local groundwater versus imported water that month. Anything above 10 grains is classified very hard. Temecula is roughly double that.
That is why the water heaters here fail early, why the glass shower doors in Redhawk and Crowne Hill fog over and never come clean, and why the dishwasher leaves a film on everything even with the expensive detergent. It is not the appliances. It is the mineral load coming in from the street.

How hard is the water in Temecula?
Between 15 and 25 grains per gallon. For comparison, San Diego County averages around 16 grains, and water is considered very hard once it passes 10. Temecula sits well past that line, and the east side of the valley toward the wine country generally reads higher than the tracts closer to the 15.
The number moves through the year because Rancho California Water District blends local groundwater with imported supply, and the ratio changes seasonally. That is part of why a neighbor's softener settings may not be right for your house. Does your Temecula home already have a softener loop?
If your house was built after roughly 2000, there is a good chance it does. Builders in Redhawk, Harveston, Crowne Hill, Wolf Creek, Paseo del Sol, and Vail Ranch commonly roughed in a softener loop in the garage, because they knew what the water here does to plumbing.
Look for two capped copper or PEX stubs close together on the garage wall near where the main line enters, usually within a few feet of the water heater. If they are there, the install is faster and cheaper, because we tie straight into the loop instead of cutting into the main line and routing a new drain. Old Town and the wine country are a different job
The older housing stock around Old Town Temecula predates the loop convention entirely. On those homes we cut into the main line, set the system, and route a drain for the regeneration cycle, which takes longer and costs more than a loop tie-in. We tell you which situation you are in before we start, not after.
Properties out along De Portola Trail and the wine country roads are their own category again. Many are on private wells rather than district water, and well water can carry iron, manganese, and sediment on top of the hardness. A softener alone will not fix iron staining. If you are on a well, we test first and size filtration to what the test actually shows.
Do I need a softener or a salt-free system?
In Temecula, almost always a softener. A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness minerals, it conditions them so they are less likely to form scale. That is a reasonable trade at 8 or 10 grains. At 20 grains it is asking a lot of the technology, and you will still get spotting on glass and fixtures because the minerals are still in the water.
The exception is a property where an HOA restricts the regeneration drain line or the home is on septic and you do not want brine going into the leach field. In those cases salt-free is the right call and we will say so. Otherwise the combo removes the minerals outright.
