Marina del Rey local water facts
- Utility
- Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 29, Marina del Rey Water System
- Total hardness
Not published as one figure for Marina del Rey. The utility reports hardness by treatment plant, so we test at your tap.
- Water sources
- Imported MWD water delivered through West Basin Municipal Water District, treated at MWD's Jensen and Weymouth plants.
- Source and year
- LA County Waterworks District No. 29 (Malibu and Marina del Rey) 2025 Consumer Confidence Report, covering calendar year 2025.
Imported Metropolitan Water District water changes from year to year. MWD's Jensen plant measured 270 mg/L of hardness in 2024 and 140 mg/L in 2025, so the figure shown here is from the most recent published year, not a permanent number.
Is Marina del Rey on the same water as Venice?
No. Venice (90291) is LADWP. Marina del Rey (90292) is served by Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 29, which buys its water from the Metropolitan Water District through West Basin Municipal Water District. That water is treated at MWD's Jensen and Weymouth plants and disinfected with chloramines.
Because the district reports its numbers by treatment plant rather than for the marina, we do not print a hardness figure for Marina del Rey. If hardness matters for your decision, we test it at your sink.
What can renters install without modifying the unit?
Almost everyone in Marina del Rey rents or owns a condo, so we start with what you can do without touching the building's plumbing.
A countertop reverse osmosis unit sits next to the sink, fills from a tank you load by hand or from the faucet, and gives purified drinking water with no installation at all. A faucet-mount carbon filter clips onto the kitchen faucet and takes out the chloramine taste. A shower filter rated for chloramine screws on between the shower arm and the head. All three leave with you when you move.
An under-sink RO system gives you a dedicated drinking water faucet and more capacity, but it is a small modification: a drain connection under the sink and usually a hole in the countertop or sink deck for the faucet. Ask your landlord in writing first. When you move out, we can remove it and cap the connections so the unit is back the way you found it.
What do condo owners need to clear with the HOA?
Anything inside your unit's cabinet is usually your call, but your CC&Rs decide, so read them before anyone drills a countertop. Anything that touches shared plumbing, a riser, or a common wall needs HOA approval, and many associations ask for a certificate of insurance from whoever does the work.
Whole-home treatment in a condo is usually not possible because units rarely have their own main line. Some townhomes do have an individual shutoff, and those can take a whole-home carbon system if the HOA agrees. Our condo and apartment guide has a checklist of questions to ask.
Is under-sink reverse osmosis the right first step here?
For most Marina del Rey households, yes. RO gives you purified water for drinking and cooking at one faucet, and its carbon stages handle the chloramine taste. It does not treat the shower, the dishwasher or the washing machine, and it does not change the water anywhere else in the unit.
For the shower, a chloramine-rated shower filter is the practical answer in an apartment. If you want to understand what each RO stage does and how often the filters are changed, read reverse osmosis explained.
What about the few houses and townhomes that own their main line?
If you own a house or a townhome with its own main shutoff, a whole-home carbon system on the main treats every tap. Whether a softener is worth adding depends on your tested hardness, which is exactly why we test before we recommend one here.
Water filtration questions from Marina del Rey
How hard is the water in Marina del Rey?
There is no single published figure for Marina del Rey. LA County Waterworks District No. 29 reports hardness by MWD treatment plant in its 2025 report rather than for the marina, so the reliable way to know your number is a test at your tap.
Who supplies water in Marina del Rey?
Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 29 supplies Marina del Rey with water bought from the Metropolitan Water District through West Basin Municipal Water District. It is not LADWP, even though neighboring Venice is.
What water filter can I use in a Marina del Rey apartment?
A countertop RO unit, a faucet-mount filter or a shower filter, because none of them changes the plumbing and all of them move with you. An under-sink RO system is also possible with your landlord's written permission.
Do I need HOA approval for an under-sink RO system?
It depends on your CC&Rs. Work inside your own cabinet is often allowed, but drilling a countertop or touching shared plumbing usually needs approval, so check the CC&Rs and ask the HOA first.
Can I take my water filter with me when I move?
Yes. Countertop, faucet-mount and shower filters come off in minutes. An under-sink RO system can be removed too, and we can cap the connections so the unit is left as you found it.
Is Marina del Rey tap water safe to drink?
Yes. The district's 2025 report says its water met or surpassed all health-based drinking water standards. People filter it for taste, smell and preference.
Does Pipe Dream Plumbing install water filters in Marina del Rey?
Yes. Pipe Dream Plumbing Co. installs under-sink reverse osmosis in Marina del Rey apartments and condos, and whole-home systems for owners with their own main line. Call (310) 957-1763.
