First: If You Smell Gas, Stop
Before any troubleshooting, the safety rule. If you smell gas, that rotten-egg smell, near your water heater or anywhere in the house, do not flip switches, do not light anything, and do not keep poking around. Leave the house, and once you are outside, call your gas company, SoCalGas, or 911.

Figure Out What You Have
The checks depend on whether your water heater is gas or electric. A gas heater has a burner and usually a pilot area near the bottom, a gas line running to it, and a vent on top. An electric heater has an electrical cable running to it and no gas line or vent.
If you are not sure, look for a gas line, a copper or steel pipe with a shutoff valve running into the unit. Gas line means gas heater. No gas line and just an electrical cable means electric. Knowing which you have tells you which list to run.
Electric Water Heater Checks
Start at the breaker panel. A water heater draws a lot of power, and its breaker can trip. Find the breaker labeled for the water heater, and if it is in the middle or off position, switch it fully off and then back on. Give the heater an hour and see if hot water comes back.
If the breaker keeps tripping, stop there and call, because a breaker that trips again right away is telling you something is wrong. The other common electric culprit is a tripped high-limit reset, a red button on the unit behind an access panel. If you are comfortable and the power is off, you can press it, but if it trips again, that is your cue to call a pro rather than keep resetting it.

Gas Water Heater Checks
For a gas heater, the usual suspect is the pilot or the burner not staying lit. First, make sure the gas is on, the shutoff valve on the gas line should be in line with the pipe, not across it. Also check that other gas appliances in the house are working, since if the stove is dead too, the issue may be your gas supply, not the heater.
Many newer gas heaters have a status light near the bottom that blinks a code. If yours is not producing hot water, check whether that light is doing anything. Relighting a pilot can be straightforward on some units following the instructions printed right on the heater, but if it will not stay lit after a try or two, do not keep forcing it. A pilot that will not hold usually means a part needs replacing, and that is a service call.
Quick Wins That Are Not the Heater
Sometimes the heater is fine. If a lot of hot water just got used, a big bath, back-to-back showers, laundry, a tank heater simply needs time to recover. Wait 30 to 60 minutes and try again.
Also worth a glance: make sure nobody bumped the thermostat dial down on the heater, and if you have a newer home, check that a whole-home shutoff or a softener bypass did not get left in the wrong position after recent work. These little things account for more no-hot-water calls than people expect.
